Pressure Range of Metal Wound Gaskets
The applicable pressure range of metal wound gaskets mainly depends on the gasket structure, metal strip material, filler material and flange sealing surface type. The common pressure ranges in industrial working conditions such as pyrolysis furnaces are as follows:
1. Classified by Structure (Core Factor)
Basic type (without inner/outer rings)
Applicable pressure: PN1.6~PN16 (1.6~16MPa)
Features: Simple structure and low cost; only suitable for flat/raised face flanges, with a relatively low pressure bearing upper limit and prone to crushing.
Inner ring type (inner ring + winding body)
Applicable pressure: PN16~PN25 (16~25MPa)
Features: The inner ring enhances gasket rigidity and prevents inward shrinkage caused by internal pressure; suitable for male and female/tongue and groove flanges, with improved pressure bearing capacity and stability.
Outer ring type (outer ring + winding body)
Applicable pressure: PN25~PN42 (25~42MPa)
Features: The outer ring positions and protects the winding body; suitable for raised/flat face flanges, capable of withstanding high pressure, and is the mainstream for medium and high pressure working conditions.
Inner and outer ring type (inner ring + outer ring + winding body)
Applicable pressure: PN42~PN100 (42~100MPa)
Features: Combines the rigidity of the inner ring and positioning of the outer ring, with the strongest creep and extrusion resistance; suitable for high pressure, high temperature and strong vibration working conditions, such as high-pressure flanges of pyrolysis furnaces.
2. Supplementary Reference by Metal Strip Material
304/316 stainless steel strip: Suitable for PN1.6~PN42MPa, the first choice for conventional working conditions.
Carbon steel strip: Suitable for PN1.6~PN16MPa, low cost and only applicable for low pressure.
High-temperature alloy (Inconel/Hastelloy) strip: Suitable for PN42~PN100MPa, special for extreme high pressure/strong corrosion working conditions.
3. Selection Recommendations for Pyrolysis Furnace Doors
Conventional pyrolysis furnaces (flange pressure ≤16MPa): Select outer ring type (304 stainless steel + graphite filled).
Medium and high pressure pyrolysis furnaces (16~42MPa): Select inner and outer ring type (316 stainless steel + graphite filled).
Ultra-high pressure working conditions (>42MPa): Select inner and outer ring type with high-temperature alloy strip + ceramic fiber filled.
