Advantages and Disadvantages of Metal Wound Gaskets

Advantages

Excellent sealing performance: Composite winding of metal strips and non-metallic fillers (graphite/ceramic fiber) ensures good resilience and high fit, adapting to slight deformation and vibration of flange surfaces with no easy leakage even under micro-negative or high pressure conditions.

High temperature and pressure resistance: Resistant to temperatures up to 600–800℃ (with graphite core) and pressure up to 16–42MPa, suitable for high-temperature and high-pressure working conditions of pyrolysis furnace flanges.

Medium corrosion resistance: Stainless steel strips combined with graphite core resist corrosion from oil vapor, acids, alkalis and sulfides, adapting to sulfur/oil-containing atmosphere in pyrolysis process.

High versatility: Available in various standard specifications with customizable sizes, suitable for all types of flange bolt furnace doors and easy to install.

Long service life and good stability: Anti-aging and anti-creep properties, with slow attenuation of sealing performance during long-term use, reducing replacement frequency.

Disadvantages

Relatively high cost: More expensive than graphite composite gaskets and ceramic fiber gaskets, with average economic efficiency for small-batch procurement.

High installation requirements: Flange surfaces must be flat and clean with uniform pre-tightening force, otherwise crushing or local leakage is likely to occur.

Non-reusable: Prone to deformation and resilience failure after disassembly, for one-time use only, leading to relatively high maintenance costs.

Not suitable for frequent opening and closing: Frequent disassembly and assembly may cause metal strip fatigue and sealing failure, more suitable for flange furnace doors with infrequent opening and closing.
